Our Story
The first statement isn’t a punch.
Before a fighter throws a shot, they’ve already made an impression.
The music. The walk. The lights. The kit.
Every detail contributes to the identity they carry into the ring. It’s one of the few moments in sport where an athlete can express exactly who they are before the competition even begins.
At Art of War Studio, we believe what you wear should be as individual as the person wearing it.
We’re a UK based creative house bringing the influence of fashion, art and custom culture into the world of sport.
Creating pieces that don’t just look different, but change how an athlete is seen.
It started with a pair of boxing boots.
Art of War Studio was founded in 2017 by boxer and Creative Director Darnell Sterling.
Having spent years in the sport, Darnell understood what boxing equipment needed to do. But when it came to expressing individuality, the options were limited.
The same silhouettes. The same colourways. The same products worn by everyone else.
Rather than accepting what was available, he began customising his own boxing boots, gloves and fightwear.
What started as a way to create something different for himself gradually became something much bigger.
The idea was never to reinvent boxing equipment for the sake of it. It was to show what else could be done with it.
To take a product designed for performance and give it the same consideration for design, detail and individuality that you’d expect from the world of fashion.
That thinking became the foundation of Art of War Studio.
From the workbench to the world’s biggest stages.
Over the years, our work has found its way onto some of the biggest stages in boxing.
We’ve created bespoke pieces for fighters including Floyd Mayweather, Oleksandr Usyk, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Canelo Álvarez, Terence Crawford and many more.
Each project has brought its own brief, challenges and opportunities to explore something different.
In 2023, we completed two bespoke pairs of boxing boots for Floyd Mayweather in a nine hour overnight turnaround ahead of his first ring appearance on UK soil.
We’ve created boots worn in world title fights, reconstructed footwear from entirely different product categories and developed complete fight night looks that blur the lines between combat and fashion.
What once started with customising existing colourways has evolved into a studio capable of reimagining the product itself.
And while the stages have grown, the principle behind the work has remained the same.
Every piece deserves the same attention, regardless of who’s wearing it.
The art of making something your own.
We don’t believe every product needs to be completely rebuilt to make an impact.
Sometimes it’s the precision of a colour transition, a change in materials or the placement of a single detail that gives a familiar silhouette an entirely different identity.
Other times, the idea demands far more.
We strip products back, reconstruct silhouettes, introduce unexpected materials and explore techniques more commonly associated with contemporary fashion than traditional sports equipment.
Our Studio Colourways offer our own interpretations of established footwear silhouettes, developed through refined in-house processes to create finishes that feel like they belong on the original product.
Our bespoke commissions take that approach further, creating original pieces around an athlete’s ideas, identity and the occasion they’re preparing for.
From understated changes to complete reconstructions, every decision has a purpose.
And when the finished product is intended for competition, appearance is only part of the equation. Fit, flexibility and functionality remain essential throughout the creative process.
The brief can change. The standard doesn’t.
Boxing is the foundation. Not the boundary.
Boxing is where Art of War began, and it will always be part of our identity.
But our interest has never been limited to one product, one silhouette or even one sport.
We’ve always looked at existing products as opportunities to explore what hasn’t been done with them yet.
That thinking has taken us from bespoke boxing boots into complete fight kits, apparel, accessories and specialist reconstructions.
It’s also changing the way we approach the moments surrounding competition.
The press conference. The weigh-in. The ring walk.
Places where performance and personal expression meet, and where the influence of fashion has the opportunity to introduce an entirely new creative direction.
We’re not interested in simply following the categories that already exist.
We’re interested in exploring what exists between them.
That’s the direction Art of War is moving towards. A creative house where craftsmanship, design and cultural influence come together to create something unexpected.
The innovation will be televised.
You’ll see these words beneath much of our work.
They’re more than a closing statement.
They represent our belief that innovation should be seen, experienced and shared.
From the first sketches and experiments inside the studio to the finished pieces stepping out beneath the lights, we want people to witness the process as well as the result.
The successes. The challenges. The ideas that haven’t been explored before.
We’re not building Art of War behind closed doors.
We’re documenting its evolution, bringing our work to new audiences and showing what’s possible when familiar products are approached with a different perspective.
The story doesn’t end with the pieces we’ve already created.
In many ways, we’re only beginning to explore what Art of War can become.
The innovation will be televised.
Your next piece starts here.
You don’t have to be a world champion to have something created by the same studio.
Whether you’re looking for one of our signature Studio Colourways or have an idea for something entirely your own, there are two ways to become part of Art of War.
