The Evolution of the AOW HyperKO 3 Colourways

The Evolution of the AOW HyperKO 3 Colourways

Nike launched the HyperKO 3 in six colourways. Art of War saw a boot that could go a lot further.

On 1 March 2026, Nike released the HyperKO 3 across UK retailers, introducing the newest generation of its signature boxing boot in six launch colourways: Black/White, White/Black, White/Gold/Black, Black/University Red, Black/Light Magenta and the Photo Blue/Sonic Yellow special edition.

It was a strong release, but looking at the colours Nike had chosen, Darnell felt there was still a lot of room to explore what the silhouette could become.

That became the starting point for the AOW Studio Colourways.

Building the AOW colourways

Rather than treating the HyperKO 3 as a finished product, Art of War treated it as a canvas.

The idea was simple: take the newest boxing boot on the market and reinterpret it through the Art of War lens.

That meant looking outside of traditional boxing footwear for inspiration and pulling influence from contemporary fashion, sneakers, art and custom culture.

The range began developing through ombre transitions, solid tonal colourways and more stripped-back options, giving fighters access to versions of the HyperKO 3 that simply were not available through Nike.

Some were louder.

Some were cleaner.

But the aim stayed the same: create colourways that felt considered enough to look like they could have existed from factory, while still being recognisably Art of War.

As the range developed, so did the different entry points into it.

Not every customer wants a completely transformed boot, which led to simpler options such as the Swoosh Pack, changing the Nike Swoosh and laces while keeping the rest of the original boot intact.

At the other end, the full Studio Colourways allowed the silhouette to be completely reworked through colour.

The result became less about offering one custom boot and more about building an expanding library of Art of War interpretations.

From an idea to a product line

What started as an experiment quickly became one of the studio's most requested product lines.

More than 20 individual HyperKO 3 colourways have now been developed, with new combinations continuing to be added as the range evolves.

The colourways have reached fighters in more than 15 countries, taking what started in the Art of War studio into gyms and rings around the world.

Across our social platforms, content surrounding the range has also generated more than 5 million views.

That reach has introduced a completely new audience to Art of War.

Some customers discover the studio through a one-off athlete commission.

Others now discover it simply because they see an AOW HyperKO 3 colourway they cannot buy anywhere else.

That distinction is important.

The Studio Colourways have allowed Art of War to take something that was traditionally a bespoke service and turn part of it into a repeatable product, without losing the creativity that made people interested in the studio in the first place.

Often imitated, never duplicated

As the range has grown, we have also seen other customisers take inspiration from the colourways and attempt their own versions.

It is not the first time that has happened with Art of War, and it probably will not be the last.

For us, the answer has always been the same: continue leading from the front and keep developing what we do.

Because the Studio Colourways are not only about choosing a good colour combination.

A huge amount of work has gone into developing the process behind them.

The preparation, application and finishing process has been refined specifically to prevent the colour from fading, cracking or chipping under normal use, while maintaining the flexibility and original feel of the boot.

That is one of the things we are most proud of across the entire line.

The goal has always been that someone could pick up an AOW HyperKO 3 and, outside of knowing that Nike never released that colourway, struggle to tell that the boot had ever been customised at all.

It should feel considered.

It should feel durable.

And it should look like it came that way.

Setting the direction

The HyperKO 3 range also represents something bigger in the direction Art of War is heading.

The studio has always been built around customisation, but the ambition is increasingly about developing an identifiable Art of War design language.

A customer should eventually be able to see a product without the logo and still recognise the approach behind it.

The HyperKO 3 has been one of the first real opportunities to build that at scale.

Nike created the canvas.

Art of War started exploring what else could be done with it.

And more than 20 colourways later, we are still not finished.

What began with one question, “what else could this boot look like?”, has developed into a product line reaching fighters around the world.

And this is still only the beginning of where the Studio Colourways can go.
