Floyd Mayweather: 9 Hours, 2 Pairs

Floyd Mayweather: 9 Hours, 2 Pairs

Two custom boxing boots, one overnight production window and Floyd Mayweather’s first appearance in a UK ring.

On Thursday 23 February 2023, Art of War was approached by Fight Label to produce two pairs of custom boxing boots for Floyd Mayweather.

Mayweather was due to fight at the O2 Arena in London that Saturday, marking his first appearance in a UK ring. Fight Label were producing the full fight-night kit and brought Art of War in to handle the footwear.

The call came on Thursday.

The boots did not arrive until Friday evening.

That left one overnight window to get both pairs completed, finished and back with Fight Label in time for the event.

The brief

The design direction centred around the occasion itself.

Mayweather was fighting on British soil for the first time, so the Union Jack became the main reference point within the footwear.

Two different base pairs were supplied: one black and one white.

Both pairs needed to work alongside the full Fight Label kit, while still holding their own as individual pieces.

The brief was straightforward. The turnaround was not.

7pm Friday to 4am Saturday

The boots arrived at around 7pm on Friday evening.

From there, it was straight into production.

Both pairs required preparation, masking, airbrushing, detailing, corrections and finishing.

The work ran continuously through the night, from approximately 7pm until 4am, to make sure the project met the deadline.

There were complications during the process which added more pressure to an already tight turnaround, but the deadline stayed the same.

By 4am on Saturday morning, the second pair was complete.

By 8am, both pairs were back with Fight Label.

From arrival to completion, the entire production window was roughly nine hours.

Fight night

Later that day, at around 7pm, Mayweather posted five potential boot options to Instagram and asked his audience which pair he should wear that night.

Both Art of War pairs were included.

The white pair received the strongest response and was ultimately selected for the fight.

That evening, Floyd Mayweather walked out at the O2 Arena wearing Art of War.

From receiving the boots on Friday evening to seeing them worn in the ring on Saturday night, the entire project happened in little more than 24 hours.

Why the project matters

The significance of the commission goes beyond the name attached to it.

It is a good example of the type of work Art of War was built to handle: high expectations, limited time and no reduction in standard.

The purpose was never simply to recolour a pair of boxing boots.

The footwear had to fit the full visual direction of the fight kit, reflect the occasion and still feel distinctly Art of War.

In this case, the moment was Floyd Mayweather’s first appearance in a UK ring.

The turnaround was one night.

The result was two pairs delivered on time, with one ultimately worn on fight night.

Projects like this are part of the reason Art of War continues to move beyond the idea of “customs” and towards becoming a wider creative studio.

The product may change.

The canvas may change.

The standard does not.

Since then, Fight Label brought Art of War back for another Mayweather commission — this time for his exhibition rematch against John Gotti III in Mexico City on 24 August 2024. The kit followed a Mexican theme, with the boots reworking the classic Adidas stripe into the colours of the Mexican flag. With no overnight scramble this time, the pair came together smoothly from start to finish.
